   This means putting clay up around the stalks. This work is done by the plough.

   Then early in July the potatoes are sprayed. They spraying mixture is bought in the local shop or in town. It is mixed with mater in a barrel, and is applied to the potato stalks by means of a machine carried on the back of the person. The spray is done best in dry weather. Some people apply the spraying mixture twice.

   The potatoes are fit for digging about the end of October. First we get the plough and two horses, and plough a drill of potatoes then one comes along on his knees and roots out the potatoes with his hands. This is dirty and disagreeable work especially during wet weather. A picker comes behind and picks the table potatoes into a bucket and then transfers them to a cart. When the cart is full it is emptied into a hole about two feet wide and six inches deep. This is called a pit.
