  1. The customs the people had long ago were.
They used to kill a sheep in every house in honour of St. Martin
They made crosses of straw, and put them up on the thatch of their house in honour of St. Bridget.
They pulled rushes, and made candles, and burned them on the Twelvth Night.
They would never churn with out a little coal under it, and they would never let a person go out without taking the churn for fear they would bring the butter with them.
When they were setting eggs they would put a piece of iron under them.
On Christmas eve they would leave the door opened in case any beggars would pass.
They would never sweep out the dirt at night for fear they would sweep out the luck.
