- 406 The Great Famine
In the year 1847 their was a great famine.
All the potatoes rotted in the ground. there was a man of John Crumlish who dug all day on hallow Eve and whe he was done at night he had not as many potatioes as would mak the poundings for their supper. The Government had to give the people free meal to help them. In those days the were no tea nor sugar and the potatiouse was the principal food they had a a peice of oaten bunnock. Some of the rich farmers would kille a calf to eat with the potatoes. The Govenrment had to suplylie themwith see the following year.
