   Marriages until quite recently took place between 6th January & beginning of lent. This was called the "ranting season". Certain days were considered lucky as the following rhyme shows. Monday for health Tuesday for wealth Wednesday the best day of all Thursday for losses Friday for crosses Saturday the worst day of all. Marriages were the result of matchmaking and the young couple had little say in the matter. There were well known match makers who were approached by the parents at fair or market. These when told of the (plann) proposed marriage
