- 15th March 1938The houses in this district were all thatched houses. There were no other kinds of houses roofs. The thatch was generally black sedge found in bog curraghs. The sedge was sometimes two miles and three miles away. The old houses had always a bed in the kitchen. It was placed close to the fire with the head of the bed to the middle gable. The place where the bed was placed was built out further than the remainder of the sidewall and that place was called the outshot. The fire-place was always at the middle gable.
