    When the stalks are dead the potatoes are dug with a potato digger the digger turns up the soil and scatters the potatoes out on each side. Some times they cannot be dug with a digger and then spades have to be used because the ground is too wet.
    The potatoes are gathered off the ground. They are put in pits well protected with rushes and clay, to be used through out the winter. Some people put them in houses when they have them to spare.
