- The Landlords
There were three local Landlords known as, the Cummings of Ballyjamesduff, the Maxwells of Lisduf and the Nappers of Lough Crew. They got these lands from Cromwell in payment for their assistance to him during his wars in Ireland. They were not very popular landlords.
These landlords divided the land among tenants who had to pay them large rents. If the tenants disobeyed in anyway he evicted them. This eviction was the seen of great trouble and annoyance and often invalids were carried out on their beds and left lying on the ground without any shelter. Often the local people attacked the Bailif and his men, but if the Bailif won, the land was given to favourites. The local people sympathised with the evicted people, by building a small house for to shelter them in the meantime. This house was known as a "Charity."
There was a family named Gybneys who lived at Corglass they were evicted during that time and the people built a shanty which the Gybneys still occupy.(continues on next page)- Collector
