  1. The subjects generally taught in the hedge schools in olden times were reading, spelling, Catechism and arithmetic. Irish was mostly spoken by the teacher and pupils, because in the olden days no language was spoken in Ireland only Irish. The teachers preferred the Irish language and Irish culture.
    Slates and signers as the pencils were called were mostly used, and afterwards they began to use copy books and pens made of goose quills. Those pens were called quill pens.
