- When Cromwell was passing from Clonmel to Dublin he came through Roscrea. When he was on his way to Monahincha he went into a house, and asked the way. The woman of the house was baking a cake and she stopped and went to show him the way. She was immediately turned into a stone and the cake on top of her head, and is to be seen there still. When the monks saw Cromwell coming they threw the sacred vessels into the lake, and some of the monks escaped through a secret tunnel into Roscrea. When Cromwell reached the monastery he plundered and burnt the church and murdered the monks. When Cromwell was leaving the monastery he planted a family named Birches. They wanted to get all the gold and silver that the monks through into the lake, when they were raided. They got a diver to go down and bring up the gold, and silver that was there in the bottom. He went down and seeing all the gold and silver that was there he took some of it in his hand and went up to the bank. He asked if they would give him half of what was in it, but they refused, and he through them back again, and went away. Then they(continues on next page)
