  1. A number of years ago an old man called Bill Dudley lived in the new Cemetry gate. He was a noted story-teller and his house was a great meeting place for boys at night.
    His stories were usually lies but he had told them so many times that he firmly believed them himself.
    One of his favourite stories was as follows.
    One Winters night after coming home from Borris I was sitting by the fire when I heard a whole lot of wild geese cackling outside. I went out to see what was up and they were all lodged in a big tree at the gable end of the house. I went in again and picked up a fine ash plant from behind the door. I then got a new candle that I brought
