  1. (continued from previous page)
    Beneath were convicts' graves;
    Some who were once their mother's love,
    And gladdened fathers' eyes,
    In deaths cold sleep lie mouldering deep,
    Till dooms-day not to rise.
    (4)
    How many more within the walls
    Live varying in their time?
    Some for years and more for life
    According to their crime;
    Ah! thousands would they gladly pay,
    E'en millions, if in store,
    To gain once that liberty
    They oft enjoyed before.
    (5)
    How thankful should we be to God,
    Who still has kept us free
    From those vile direful crimes which would
    On us bring misery,
    And preserved for us what's more than gold
    A character pure and high;
    Health and the sweets of liberty,
    Wealth could not these supply.
