  1. Timber
    Clashmore about forty years ago must have been one of the prettiest places in Munster. It was beautifully wooded all along from Creggs to Kiely's Cross. Only a very small remnant of those fine woods remain today and day by day they are being cut down for fire wood.
    They say the 'Crooked Bridge' in those days was a noted beauty spot and people came even from Cork City to see it and picnic there.
    There were two noted trees there called 'The Lord' & 'The Lady'. Unfortunately they as well as the wood were cut down by a local farmer when the land was purchased and the woods given over to the tenants.
    Four years it took to cut down all the timber. 'Fallers' as they were called came from all over Ireland working here (One a Laoise man settled down, married in the place). Unfortunately planting was neglected with the result that much of the surface soil is being washed away exposing the bare rock underneath.
    The Slate Quarry
    The old Slate Quarry in Knockbrack supplied all the slate that was used in roofing here about a hundred years ago. The slate on the school came from there. It was
