    The potatoes are cut into slits - an eye being left in each slit. Holes are made in the ridges a foot apart. A slit is placed in each hole and the holes are covered.
    The ridges are left for a fort-night. Then manure is spread on each ridge and mould is placed on it. This is called "labouring".
    In June the stalks are sprayed so as to prevent blight.
    The usual kinds of potatoes sown are Irish Queens, Kerry Pinks, Arran
