Of Monaghan county you sportsmen draw near,
On the fifth of October some praises you'll hear
The deeds of a hero living near Ballybay
They call him High jackson I hear people say
His mills, Kilns, and barns they bear a great show,
His cloth from the North to the city does go,
For bleaching fine linen he exceeds them all
And he's greatly approved of in the Linen Hall.
More of his praises I am going to begin
A muse may assist me while I speak of Jane
Search Ireland round from Meath to Kildare
You will scarcely equal that bonny bay mare.
He went into the stable and this he did say
The hour is approaching that you must away.
The cup at Cootehill you twice ran with fame
This day you are challenged to run for it again."
Jane made him answer: "Kind Sir, dont you know
The cup it's my own, and I'll ne'er let it go
I have won it before _ as I mean to do still
In splendour I'll bring it from the plains of Cootehill"
Squire Adams appeared in his scarlet so new
He says to squire Corrie - "Miss Jane she's in view
Her pride and ambition this day it will fall
For I'm sure she can't win the cup from us all."
