Some neighbouring farmers help each other to put in the crop. This enables them to get it done quickly.
During the Summer months the growing potatoes in the drills are grubbed, that is, the clay that is on each side of the rows of potatoes, is taken down with a grubber, and then is there is any of the clay very rough and lumpy it is broken. The clay is then put up again with a plough. It freshens the clay, and helps to make the potatoes grow better. It also prevents weeds from springing up and choking the stalks of the young potatoes. This task is usually performed twice, and it is called "moulding".
When the stalks are nearly done growing, the farmers sprays them with a mixture of bluestone and lime, or bluestone and washing soda. If he did not do this, they would die soon, and the young potatoes would be very small and(continues on next page)- Collector
