These forts were built on tops of hills to warn the people against danger, when danger was approaching a fire was lighted in these forts to warn the people.
These forts are circular in shape.
There is a defence round each fort, first there is a mound of earth, then there is a trench and another mound. Sometimes forts have double ramparts. There is a gap or opening into these forts. At Clones there is an unusual fort, it is like a terraced garden, it is said a chief lived there at one time.
It is said to be unlucky to interfere with forts as it is supposed fairies live in them.
People put their crops, cattle and belongings into these forts for protection against robbers. Long ago there were more forts than at the present day as they were levelled out, it is said that a man went to plough out a fort one time with a pair of horses and as he was starting to plough his both horses fell dead.
