  1. Long ago there were no National Schools as there are now, and the Children were taught in their own houses at night. There was an old learned man, at this time who used to go around from one house to another in the week, and teach the children the subjects, Writing, Reading and Arithmetic.
He was quartered at Ballinabarney and travelled from house to house teaching during the week. At that time there was no plentiness of education, as it had nearly died out of the country, and in this way the people were very pleased to have their children taught by this man.
So they were taught the subjects they needed, to get on in the world. This brilliant master was not educated as teachers have to be now.
    He died in Castleruddery..
