    Fearna
Fearna - Town of the alders - many alder trees grew round this district in ancient times, not so many nowadays - in fact not any more than in any other country district.
The town is supposed to be built on a very old site more ancient than the See of Canterbury - about the 6th Century. Ferns was the ancient capital of Leinster long ago, and Dermot Mac Morragh lived there. No hidden treasure is hidden in Ferns, but many old relics of broken crosses + an effigy of our Patron Saint Saint Aedan is placed inside the Cathedral door. An old graveyard which surrounds the cathedral contains many ancient tombs, among them the tomb of the famous Dermot Mac Morrogh.
The old cross (broken) is still to be seen marking the spot.
