    St Ibar, founder and patron of the ancient monastery...

    Ibar or Iubhar means a yew-tree, probably called after a great sacred yew-tree, which grew on the island. (name of saint forgotten)

    The Monastery and school on Bergin were many times plundered by the Danes.

    The monastery and school on Begerin were many times plundered by the Danes.
    The annals record the death of two abbots Diarmuid in 884 and Cruinmeal in 964.
    It is stated that a wooden statue of "St Iubhar" was held in veneration and preserved on the scene of his labours in 1662. Easboc Iubhair seemed to have been an ecclesiastical title - Bishop of Iubhar.
    St Iubhar was St. Abban's uncle and tutor.
