  1. I have travelled many lands,
    From China to Peru,
And with details of beauty spots,
    Could entertain you too.
But why wander far for beauty haunts,
    No fairer have I seen,
Than the hills, and lanes, peaceful calm,
    Beneath the Hill of Skryne.
On evenings fine with dog and gun,
    I tramped its grassy slopes,
While life was broad before my mind,
    So bright with gilded hopes.
Yes! young and gay I scorned the place,
    This quiet pleasant scene.
Last place on earth I named it then,
    And fled from homely Skryne.
Midst this and that, but best forget,
    I disillusioned grew,
No carefree crowd of football pals.
    In foreign lands I knew.
Nor was one there to grip my hand,
When down on luck I'd been,
No! a mothers love and a sweethearts smile,
    I left behind in Skryne.
