  1. Drogheda is a very old and historic town. There are many stories told concerning this town and many arguments concerning its number of gates. Some people maintain that there were ten while others say eight. Alas there is but one gate known throughout Ireland as Laurences Gate. On the north side of the town however there stood another gate known as Sundays Gate. A peculiar thing about this gate was that it was kept closed all the week but was thrown open on Sunday to allow the country people from all round Ballymakenny to go to Mass for they had no church in that part of the country.
