  2. It is stated that after the breaking up of the confederation of Kilkenny, by Cromwells soldiers that the confederates held a meeting in the Old Castle of Clare.
    It is also understood that Ireton the commander of the Cromwellians stayed for some time in the same Castle on his way from Limerick to Galway. It was during this journey that Clare Castle suffered most. Abbeys, Monasteries and houses of the Catholics were burned.
