"You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear"
"The world wouldn't make a racehorse of an ass"
"Have it or be without it" as Paddy Shelly's thrush whistled.
Paddy Shelly lived about seventy years ago at Lickfin, Parish of Gortnahoe, Barony of Slievardagh, County Tipperary.
On a Wednesday night there was no bread in the house and Paddy had no money.
"Go up Jack avie" said he to one of his sons "and ask three loaves at -- shop and tell 'em I'll pay for it on Saturday"
Jack went to the shop but was refused. When Paddy saw him returning empty-handed he said "Well Jack avie I though so much, for while you were gone the thrush whistled a strange tune."
"What was the tune daddy" said Jack
"O avie "Have id or be widout id"
The saying stuck and is repeated everywhere in the district to the present day, when the occasion for its application arises.
