- For the past thirty years or more, Limerick County was famous for its hurlers. As far back as 1909, Limerick had a County team, which was famed in song and story. The hurling teams in those days numbered seventeen men in each team. The playing pitch was longer and the sliotar was much heavier than that used at the present day. On this account too, the men appeared to be much heftier. The Limerick team of this period was captained by the famous Tyler Mackey, father of the famous present Limerick captain. Four years in succession this Limerick team contested the All-Ireland final, with the champions of Munster. In the year 1912, Kilkenny were their opponents in the All-Ireland final, which was to be played in the old field at the Mardyke, Cork. A big crowd travelled(continues on next page)
