  1. Some incidents in the district connected with '67 Rising.
    Two local Fenians, John Loftus of Stonehall in the parish of Kilcornan and David Purtill of Ballinagoole, Croagh, were drilling in preparation for the '67 rising. They were unarmed, they met two armed policemen at Ballinagool which cross is situated about one mile to the west of shountrade. N. school. They attacked and disarmed the two policemen. They then returned their arms and set them free.
    David Purtill was one of the men who attacked Kilmallock barracks on a march morning in '67.
    Two other noted, fenians were the brothers Ryan, of Mount Pleasant, Askeaton, which place is situated about five miles to the west of Shountrade, N. School.
