- There was once a boy named Jack. He had no father. He was a lazy fellow and his mother was a poor widow and Jack would not work for her. One day his mother got out her temper with him and she said if you do not work you can go and earn a living for yourself. I am not going to feed a lazy fellow like you. All right, said jack, I'll work for you not for me said Jack she but for a farmer. Jack said he would after his breakfast. When he had his breakfast eaten he set out for the road. He was was walking away until he heard some-yone tapping inside the ditch it was a leprechaun mending a shoe with a little hammer. Jack peeped in over the ditch and he saw the little man dressed in red. Jack made a grab for him and caught him by the arm.(continues on next page)
