  1. Long ago, when farmers used kill farm animals such as cows, pigs, and sheep, for food, they usually kept the lard or fat of the dead animals to make home-made candles. The lard was melted into a liquid state. Rushes were then got and peeled. The peeled rushes were dipped into the melted lard and when taken out they were allowed to harden. The candles made in this way were known as "Páideóga".
Candles were also made in small moulds, with the melted fat or tallow. The wick in these candles was made of cord or threads of various kinds.
