- About thirty four years ago there was born in this parish a man who is known all over the world for strength - Dr Pat O Callaghan. He was educated first in Derrygalon National School. He won the World Championship in 1928 and in 1931 for throwing the 56 lbs hammer. In 1936 he beat the world's record but he lost it again in 1937. He completed his education in the University College Dublin where he studied to be a doctor
