Up to about a hundred years ago the farmers had to pay tithes. This was one tenth of their crops and livestock for the year. For many years they had to pay these tithes to the local minister. He was living in the house which is now Mc Carthy's in Garrycloyne, Blarney.
One night they met in a house and said that when the time would come to pay the tithes they would fill his fields with the crops on some wet night and that the minister could cover them or else leave them rot.
So the crops rotted and they had to make some settlement. Thus the tithes were ended in this district.
