  1. In the years 1846 and 1847 the famine visited the school district of Newtown. The district was then very thickly populated. There were about five houses to every one house now.
    There are ruins pointed out now that were occupied then. They are known by several names such as "Bessie's house". Sad to say that this ruin does not exist. It is supposed to be some hundred yards from the school entrance. Another is "Katties"
