hundred pins stuck in a row inside the cape of their coat or as many buttons strung on a twine
The teetum totum was somewhat like a top having 4 square faces and tapering to a point and opposite to the point was a peg by means of which it was spun. On each face was a letter H. P. A. N. The players put down their stakes (buttons or pins) then one player spun the totum and when it came to rest one of the letters was uppermost; if H he took half the stakes and the next player spun it; if P. was up he had to put down a stake; if A was on top he took all the stakes and then each had to stake again and N stood for none that is he took no stakes and so the game proceeded each in turn spinning.
