  1. Athy abounds in historical legend and has many ancient buildings strange that this no local history availed to tell us of the truth or otherwise of a lot of the local legends that we hear from time to time.
    What interests me is a story about a tunnel. I have heard it told that there is a tunnel right under the Barrow and that it connects up Whites Castle and Woodstock Castle. The story goes that when men were digging near the courthouse Athy they discovered a tunnel and at the point of discovery the tunnel was going under the Barrow and was leading from Whites Castle. They saw locally that it was used for escape in the time
