  1. French Furze is a district in the parish of Kildare and in the townland of Tully East. It is an extensive district extending from Windmill Hill, near the town of Kildare to Maddenstown. I have never heard any explanation of the name. There is however an old horse-trainer's establishment in the district known as "French house" and another residence nearby called "French Cottage" both of which would seem to point to some ancient landlord.

    FRENCH FURZE FAIR:
    It is in this district that the most famous horse-fair in Ireland was held. It is still held on 26th July but had declined greatly in importance in the past twenty years. The Fair Green stretches from French Cottage
