  1. Local Fairs
The local fairs are held in Scotstown, Tydavnet, Roslea, and Monaghan. They are always held in towns or villages. Buyers often make bargains at cross roads and at farmer's houses. The fairs which have been held formerly have been still continued. The fairs are held in a special place called "The Fair Green". When an animal is sold "luck money" is given. It is called a "luck penny". It is left to the seller to decide how much he will give as a "luck penny". When an animal is sold sometimes the hair is clipped at the side of the ear or mud is put on their back. When an animal is sold, if it is wild, the halter is given to the buyer.
The May fair and the November fair are the great fairs in Monaghan and Clones. There are no special fairs held for the sale of sheep, bonhams or horses.
