    strictly observed. Up until recently the men always endeavoured to "drown the shamrock" on that day but owing to the "strictness of the law" nowadays this old custom is dying out.
    Shrove Tuesday:-
    This used be the favourite day for weddings. It is still known as "pancake Tuesday" the custom being to make pancakes for the evening tea on this occasion.
    Ash Wednesday:-
    This was always regarded as one of the "black fast" days , in the olden times people old and young, abstained from the use of milk, eggs and butter on and subsequent days in Lent.
    Whit:-
    "Beware of fire and water round Whit". It was regarded unlucky for a child to be born on "Whit"
