- Soap was a thing unheard of long ago. This is how the people got on without it. When the washing day would come about they used to half- peel a potato then they would put it down in a saucepan of water, until it would be half done and greasy. This done they would take it out of the water and let it cool. Then they would use it just as we use soap.
