  1. About ten years ago there lived an old man named Michael Pembroke. He lived alone in a small white cottage in Garnaman beside the main road between Kells and Kilkenny. Whenever he went to the public house, and drank too much spirits; he usually fell asleep. One night he went to the public house; and brought with him his donkey and cart. When he left it and got into the cart he went asleep. The donkey went on and stopped outside the cottage at the gate.
    The neighbours in Garnaman planned to play a trick on this man. When they saw him asleep, they took him to the kitchen. They unharnessed the donkey from the cart and brought it in also. Then they took off the wheels of the cart; and brought the cart in side-ways through the door. They then put
