In the olden times all the houses were thatched with straw or rushes.

In the olden times all the houses were thatched with straw or rushes. They get straw and make fangles of it. It is then put on in strickes and sowed on with a sugán made with hay. That will continue until the roof is finished They then throw water on it. The top is done by means of twisting the fangle in the middle and bending it over on both sides. The roof is made first with poles. They are light poles called runners. They are left across the poles which form the roof these are covered over with thin sods of turf.
