    spread a coat of wheaten straw hence the name thatch. They contained a big kitchen and two rooms. The chimneys were built very low, lest they would be knocked down by high winds.
    The kitchen usually contained a large sized fire-place with a hob on each side and a "Pouch Bed". These cottages were usually whitewashed inside and outside and there could be nothing more pleasing to the eye than to see these cottages in their dazzling whiteness.
