The woman of the house came to the pot to give him the cup of soup and the boy stood up out of her way and laid his hand with the shamrock on it on Pierce's shoulder. When the woman took the cover of the pot Pierce and the boy saw, not the bull's head, but the head of the old man and whiskers and all boiling down on the pot.
