  1. One night as I was sitting near the fire my father told me a story of meeting a mysterious man in the townland of Ballygarret about a couple of hundred yards from my house. It occured about thirty years ago. He was on all occasions seen about the house and farm where the Finucane family live at present. The man was about five feet in height, wearing a long tailed coat, "hardy" hat, knee breeches and long stockings. He could be seen between sunset and sunrise. He looked like a foreigner, nobody knew who he was. Many people in the district who are alive today saw him. He was a harmless man and never did anything to any person except to frighten him. One morning very early my father witnessed him preventing a neighbour, Tom Finucane who still occupies the house, from taking his pigs to the market to sell. He would not allow him take the horse and cart through a gap leading for the house. After a while the cock crew three times. The strange
