It is said that Lord Howth's sister lived in the west of Ireland. Her name was Gráinne Mhaol. One day she came to Howth Castle on a visit. The house was empty and she had to return to the west. She stole the king's son. She would not give back the child until a promise was made that an extra place would be laid at the table in the dining hall. Her request was granted and ever since there is an extra place laid.
