  1. (no title) (continued)

A long time ago there lived a shoemaker whose wife had died. He had an only daughter...

    (continued from previous page)
Then she sat by the fire & began eating the wheaten bread. One of the men asked her for some, but she said "it was little enough for herself".
Then they asked her to sweep the floor & she said "where is the servant girl you had last year"? They then told her to go home & when she was leaving the house one of the little fellows said she would be uglier every day than the day before. The second said he would give her a beard the length of a goats. The third said he would give her as a present a sudden death.
The girl went home but her mother did not know her she was so ugly. Everything happened just as the little men had predicted, she got so ugly that her mother had to keep her hidden from view and in the end her misery was finished by a sudden death.
The shoemaker's daughter became so beautiful that her fame spread all over the world & in the end she married the king's son & lived happily ever after.
