   When it is going to rain in this country the wind is usually west or south-west. The sky is dull and heavy with thick mauls of clouds and a few hours before the rain falls the air gets very chilly. Animals know when we are going to get rain. Cattle, and especially horses, face the wind until they come to a fence that breaks it. Pussy sits with her back to the fire and the dog usually gets very sleepy. Birds are quiet and wise. Crows and other birds will not go from their nests while the curlew and seagulls give notice of approaching rain when they wheel about with their mournful cries. When the sun sets very pale it is a sign of rain. Circles round the moon also denote rain. The old rhyme: "A rainbow in the morning is the sheperd's warning A rainbow at night is the sheperd's delight"
