  1. There are many districts in this country in which the ruins of old schools can be seen There are some of them in this district. A few of them were built by a man named Synge and were called "soup schools". These were used to entice the poor people to commit sin.
    One of these is situated on a hill at a place called Carhue. It is a stone building with a slated roof which has nearly all fallen. It was built about a hundred years ago. It is two storeys high. Instead of stairs the top storey was entered by means of a big mound of earth at the back. By this means no stairs had to be climbed by the children. Synge himself taught there.
