- The worst storm ever heard of in Ireland happened on 6th January 1839, just one hundred years ago. That night is called "The Night of the Big Wind". On that night many of the small country houses were either burned or blown down.
During the day the weather was very wild and as night approached it grew worst. People were sitting around the fire and suddenly doors and windows were blown in and the "grísach" was blown off the hearth and went all through the house.
