- The food of the people long ago was very different from our food.
They had no tea or coffee.
Their bread was made from oatmeal. This was baked on a griddle which was placed before the open fire. This bread was quite hard.
Oatmeal porridge or stirabout was in general use. The people ground their corn with small water mills.
Before the arrival of St. Patrick there was no sugar. Honey was used instead of sugar. Beehives were kept at almost every farmhouse.
For drink they had ale and a sweet sort of drink called mead. Both these drinks were made at home.
