- People in this locality are exceptionally good judges of the weather. Since the saving of their crops of chiefly - hay, oats and turf - as well as the safety of their sheep on the bleak mountains, depends to a great extent upon the weather they have become minute observers of the natural indications of rain, frost, snow or storms and without the aid of barometers can foretell weather changes with amazing accuracy.
Here are some of them.
1 When the hens pick themselves in the farmyard it is the sign of rain.
2 Or when the dogs eat grass.
3 When the sheep come down from the mountain.
4 When the cricket sings.
5 Or when there is a circle around the moon some people say the nearer the circle the farther the storm.
9 When there is a grey frost in the morning.
10 When the cat sits by the fire.
11 When the sun is strong early in the morning. It is said that it will not last the whole day.
