- Potatoes are grown on our land. An acre of potatoes is sown on our farm each year. My father gets the ground ready. Sometimes it is manured before being turned up, and potatoes are always manured after being sown. The potatoes are sown in drills. They were sown in ridges years ago. The drills are made with a plough. Wooden ploughs were used a long time ago, but iron ploughs are used now. There is a wooden plough to be seen yet in this district at Mr. Yuite's house. The spades we use are bought in the shop. The potatoes are cut with knives in the middle before sowing. Sometimes people help one another. The potatoes are moulded with a moulding plough in Summer. My father and some workmen pick the potatoes. They are dug out with a potato digger and then the men pick them. The potatoes are stored in pits. The potatoes we sow are called Kerr Pinks and Presidents. Presidents grow the best in our district. Other potaotes grown locally are, Irish Queens, Shamrocks, Eicures, Aran Banners and British Queens.
