  1. In the year eighteen hundred and forty five on the eleventh of January a great storm took place.
It is now ninety three years ago.
In that year there were many storms but that was the greatest of them all.
It killed some sheep and cattle and a horse belonging to a farmer in Bannow.
There was a young man, coming from Carrig in a horse and cart and as he was in the middle of the trees. One fell on him and killed himself and the horse.
So many trees fell that it took a week or more before the body was found.

  2. The ferry is at the back of the Island and before the days of motors, trains, or bicycles people used to cross from the Boathouse at the Ferry to the hurdle, in the ferryboat and walk the couple of miles to Fethard. Great crowds used to cross every Sunday in the Summer but the bicycle finished all that.
